Our Story
‘CASA’ means home in Spanish and ‘Armaana’ means want or the desire to in Punjabi. The main goal of our brand is to provide a variety of hand block printed textiles that you can choose from to complete your sacred space, your home. We want our customers to select statement pieces, that are inspired by art, design, and craftsmanship from around the world. At CASA by Armaana, we want to preserve ancient techniques such as hand-block printing and acknowledge this beautiful process of creating handmade textiles. We aspire to practice traditional methods in creating textiles which are sustainable and eco-friendly.
Our founder, Armaana Singh, grew up in Los Angeles where a strong Latin American heritage exists. The culture had similarities with her own Indian heritage such as the food, patterns, colors, and love for handmade textiles. It always reminded her of home and gave her a sense of comfort. Growing up in a multicultural society both in California and India gave her an insight into how art and history have a huge influence in creating handmade textiles.
During her years living in India, she learned about the variety of artisan textiles and traditional techniques. The technique of block printing caught her eye at a young age and fascinated her. However, when she moved back to Los Angeles for university, she faced a cultural shock. It was hard for her to decipher what home was for or where it was. She always carried along one block-printed blanket, that defined home for her. It made her feel a piece of home was always with her.
Her travels to Spain and Portugal further intrigued her to study more about the architectural styles and tilework found across these beautiful countries. She learned how Portuguese and Mughal architecture had influenced one another in certain elements like interfacing arches, tessellations, and decorative tilework. After some time, she knew she wanted to create handmade artisan textiles inspired by her travels and tell a story of every city she lived or visited through artisan handmade textiles. Armaana wanted to incorporate elements from different cultures and architectural styles. Hence, the birth of CASA by Armaana. Armaana wanted to stick to her roots, but integrate other cultures similar to what her life has been. Therefore, chose to use hand-block printing to tell her story through intricate designs and color palettes inspired by streets, homes, nature, and architectural buildings from across the world. CASA by Armaana is the vision of what the amalgamation of different cultures is and how the importance of understanding culture can lead to creating timeless textiles and meaningful stories.
